Naha-Te is one of the original karate styles that developed around the port town of Naha, the modern-day capital of Okinawa. Naha-Te represents a 'family taught' system of karate. In this way, students work more one-on-one with the Sensei and advance only when ready. This is the system our dojo follows, giving students the opportunity to learn and practice at their own pace.
Shuri-te is a karate style that developed on the Okinawa Archipelago in Shuri City. It was mainly the local "nobility" who practiced Shuri-te at the royal palace in Shuri. Shuri-Te represents a 'military taught' system of karate, where one teacher works with many students, and typically each performing the same technique and working towards a set timeframe to advance.
Tomari-Te is a karate style originating from the village of Tomari, Okinawa. Tomari-Te seems to have been a mixture of both internal and external aspects of Shuri-Te and Naha-Te. This crossover represents a more 'modern taught' system of karate, where parts of multiple styles are combined to create a newer/more modern style of karate.
